About Deborah

Varien

My name is Deborah and I'm an artist and graphic designer.

I was trained in Graphic Design and Illustration (and before that art and design) at the prestigious Central St Martins College of Art in London.

Since graduating in 2005 I have worked in luxury retail as a sales consultant and then as a professional mystery shopper and retail auditor, whilst working in my spare time as a designer, artist and illustrator and building up my freelance practice. I now work as an artist and designer full time.

On this website, you can purchase web design, graphics, business stationery, custom social stationery and wedding stationery. I'll also be selling a selection of fine art originals and prints, as well as gifts.

Web Design

I've built up my name by creating beautiful but inherently useable and well designed 'bespoke' websites for small to medium sized businesses.

Coming from a family who have always owned small businesses I have a firm belief that smaller enterprises should have access to the same great design, writing, branding and sales knowledge that their larger competitors do - even if they have greater budgetary constraints and lack the buying power.

My extensive sales skills and customer service knowledge gained from those years in retail help inform my approach to designing for business.

I know that businesses want sales. They also want to inform, befriend and charm their customers to ensure repeat sales and build customer loyalty. I build websites holistically. They're beautifully designed and look great - but they also build brand, convey the right information, market your business, and help your business to sell your product or service (without baffling, confusing or using the hard-sell). Persuasion. Pure and simple.

Ready to Wear, Tailored or Bespoke?

Unlike most other web designers, I currently do not create my designs from a generic template. I work with what you tell me, to create something that is inherently you. And only you. Bespoke. REALLY bespoke.

However, that process can be expensive as it takes time (and quite a bit of it).

So, I am now in the process of creating the Ready to Wear website - which is ideal for the first time website owner and those on a budget.

It works by taking the idea of a 'template' system as a base. But - the template is tailored to specific business types, ensuring that every element in the website is specific to your own particular type of business.

Each website is then further customisable with add on modules, multiple colour options, photo galleries, a content management system and your own logo. The photos that you send me are optimised for fast loading, colour corrected and lightly retouched. Your website copy is edited so that it reads beautifully, is in relevant sections, has consistent tone of voice and is scattered with SEO keywords.

It's like a super-deluxe template. Hand finished and gone over with a fine tooth comb to ensure that your website reflects your business in a unique way.

For customers on a budget but who want to be sure that their look is unique, I am creating the Tailored Fit website. We start with a base layout - much like in the Ready to Wear website - but we discuss your colour options (to match your branding exactly), custom options and add ons, specific design details and custom functionality. It's a bespoke website that is entirely you but without the bespoke price tag.

The full Bespoke website will still be available for customers who want the most original, creative and unique design possible. Starting from scratch, with or without CMS, 1 page to 100 or 1000 pages, entirely you and nobody else. The really, really bespoke option.

Customers that don't have the money to spend on a bespoke website (my kind of bespoke not other web designers), can still get great design tailored to their specific needs by choosing either the Ready to Wear or the Tailored Fit options.

This saves you money and helps me to feel that I have helped another business and not hindered them with something badly designed for them.

Customised Stationery

II'm fascinated by the ways in which we communicate, and this has driven me to create my modern stationery wardrobes. I love all of that old fashioned etiquette - but we live in the 21st century - so I have amended the original 'benchmarks' to create custom stationery products that reflect the ways that we live and communicate with each other today.

Less fussy than the traditional stationery options (and really - why should we need to have something engraved when it looks virtually as good and is much much cheaper with high quality print), but still with a nod to etiquette, good practice and high taste, my custom stationery ranges follow the business model of my websites - great design for everyone at reasonable prices.

Hand finished with your details or images - not just cobbled together - you get the tailored approach and nothing off the rail. It's personal design detailing allied with modern digital short run printing that makes my stationery so beguiling, professionally finished and yet reasonably priced.

I always want you to get the best product for your money.

That is why I don't produce my printing in-house. My print products are produced to exceptionally high specifications using the best equipment possible. Sure, it takes a little longer to get your product - but good things are worth waiting for and the beautiful results speak for themselves.

Fine Art & Illustration

Illustration has always been one of my specialisms and I have produced work for editorial commissions, magazine covers, websites, advertising and greetings cards. If you would like to talk about commissioning some illustration, then do get in touch.

Over the next few weeks you will start to see some of my art-work come for sale as originals, high quality prints, postcards and greetings. I also hope to get a stock library online for some of my generic illustration work.

My art style is bold and expressive. I love drawing and am equally skilled with traditional media such as pencil and paper, charcoal, or ink and brush, or using vectors on a computer. In my art and illustration practice I generally deal with themes such as the way we interact with each other, social conventions and people as a whole. I am also interested in non-traditional still life, objects, things and "stuff".

xoxo (all my love)
